My rant will follow below:

After several line-ups changes over the years, and a big announcement in June saying that members Andy Mrotek (drums) and Michael Guy Chislett (guitar) would be leaving, TAI has finally called it quits. This marks the end of the majority of Decaydance / Fueled By Ramen bands as we know them For example, Fall Out Boy is on indefinite hiatus, Panic[!] At the Disco split in two and is a little indecisive on its name's punctuation, Gym Class Heroes is going strong but not without a little bit of spotlight stolen by "Travie" McCoy (he too, used to be known by a slightly different name) and a little bit of selling out with Adam Levine on their current record.

Six of the eleven acts listed on the Decaydance page of Artists (as of 10/8/2011) are acts that have broken up or ceased creating music. Some kind of domino effect is going on here, and at this point, past fans probably don't care because they've been strung along, promised new albums for far too long. Pete Wentz no longer has the magic touch and Fueled By Ramen has been commonly known as an entity within Atlantic Records for quite some time now. The number of people who blindingly join the bandwagon of whatever bands sign to the label is dwindlingly fast. I mostly blame their personal lives - these artists are growing up and while they once were all some sort of circle of friends, they now have different musical tastes and lifestyles (for example, William Beckett from TAI has a daughter) and they don't have that united front of bands on the cutting edge of popular rock music (if that isn't an oxymoron) anymore.

I'll miss The Academy Is..., but more so, I already miss the days when the majority of my favorite bands consisted of members who were all alive and together and able to be seen in concert.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hear-it-all.blogspot.com/2011/10/academy-is-over.html' title='The Academy Is... Of course, it was TV that brought her first single "Jar of Hearts" to life in the first place.

Last year, her EP and eventual music video for "Jar of Hearts" gained her fame after being featured on So You Think You Can Dance - and again a little under a year later on Glee. She was named a Vh1 "You Oughta Know" Artist and in May released lovestrong., her first full-length.

Like many writers (and writer she is), she seems to favor heartbreak as her main motif. And she's got that penchant for awKward/artistic capitaLization, or lack thereof. She isn't afraid to use skin as a replacement for paper, however, with more awesome tattoos than there's room here to mention.

In describing her time spent in the studio (only slightly more than a month) she said, "I was running back and forth doing the vocals, the piano, the guitar, the harmonies, and the doubles.”

Yeah, she's one of those types. The ones who get their dream on with a random breakthrough, and actually deserve it (with those chops, and the actual ability to play and write for multiple instruments? Please, you can't dispute this). A Cinderella story.

Judge for yourself if she's got a way with words. The Late Show with Letterman @ 11:35pm August 1st. She's come back stronger than ever, and effectively dropped her Disney affiliation. Nonetheless, she can still be seen as a decent role model - if only she'd have taken risks in sharing her story with her fans earlier, rather than risks with her health. She is currently in the studio with Timbaland (according to her tweet) which could play out interestingly. I'll be forever waiting to see if her collaboration with frontman of The Academy Is..., William Beckett, is ever put out into the world, though.

"only silence has its ending, like we never had a chance"

click to listen.

The Academy Was...

The Academy Is... is falling apart and losing almost half of their members just like a whole slew of other Fueled By Ramen bands (Paramore, Fall Out Boy, ring any bells?). If you're too lazy to read the letter above, Andy "The Butcher" Mrotek and Michael Guy Chislett are leaving to pursue other creative ventures, for The Butcher, namely a band with the same name as his online art gallery, The Animal Upstairs, and for Chislett, touring as a guitarist for Brooke Fraser. Just conjecture here, but I don't think that this was their idea.

Neither leaving musician was a founding member (The Butcher replaced Michael DelPrincipe, the original drummer, and Chislett replaced Tom Conrad, making him the third lead guitarist). TAI has begun to follow suit in the manner of many young(ish) powerpop bands with a revolving door of musicians coming and going for one or two albums each.

The majority of lyrics have been credited to singer/frontman William Beckett, and the majority of the music has been credited to Beckett and only-remaining-guitarist Mike Carden, so they seem to be in good hands as far as writing new music goes. Their website features a clip of new material, though there's no hint as to when there will next be an album release. The last formal album came out in 2008, though an EP came in concurrence with their spot on the AP Fall Ball Tour in 2009.

" i feel the tide is turning, the end of a chapter starts today, do i really belong here anymore anyway?"

click to listen.

Faded Paper Figures

In this digital age, many a band relies solely on messy lyric search engines to display the words that accompany their music. Rather than pour over pages printed on glossy paper, we Google for posts by other listeners, which is quite subjective. And while Seal might be okay with any interpretation, some listeners just want to know the true meaning.

Which brings me to Faded Paper Figures. Much in the style of The Postal Service, the Californian indie-electronica band features both male and female vocals, punctuated with both organic drums and electro blips. Like the Postal Service's Give Up, their 2010 album New Medium was recorded unusually (in the case of FPF, on both coasts of the United States, in the case of the Postal Service, by mail). And their gorgeous lyrics are gorgeously displayed in one place, with hyperlink annotations to give context for where their got their inspiration. You mean there's someone using the Internet to give rather than take credit? Yes, indeed Faded Paper Figures is something different. If you don't believe me...

"the cold is nice, when love is ice, our solitude will warm the room.
we'll melt here like icicles, electric and lyrical, our solitude will warm the room"

Butch Walker and the Black Widows

Cover art from the coolest forty-something musician in America, Butch Walker manages to write for his own current band and produce for everyone from female pop stars to powerpop bands (P!nk, Avril, Katy Perry, The Academy Is..., and All Time Low to name a few).

After losing his house and all his worldly possessions in a wildfire, Walker pressed on and wrote Sycamore Meadows. The video was exactly what their fans expect: amazing and innovative enough to make your eyes fall from your face or for your body to spontanteously burst into dancing or headbanging - whatever floats your boat. Not to mention, it was free on iTunes for a while, so I loved it all the more.

But it is Closer to the Edge that is my favorite song and video so far, if only because I've seen so much concert footage done wrong - whereas 30 Seconds to Mars has it down to a science, or maybe a highly calculated art. If you aren't moved by this then maybe you are Heartless (yeah, I got me some Kanye nostalgia).

Also check out the video for Hurricane if you'd like.

click to listen.

Kanye West

And so he returns.
Make that returned... months ago.
It was to be expected yada yada. Frontwoman Hayley Williams is nominated in three other categories for her contribution to the song and video Airplanes by B.o.B.

The new artist category sadly sums up the year's music: a few too many autotuned pop stars (although indie-electronic collaboration Broken Bells isn't painful at all and always preferable Beiber).

"when i was younger i saw my daddy cry and curse at the wind"

click to listen.

Automatic Loveletter

"Wait what??? You got to see your tied-for-favorite singer* perform live?" Yes, yes I did.
Vans Warped Tour Twenty Ten was good to me - I got to see plenty of great artists (Mayday Parade, Sum 41, AM Taxi, The Cab, Anarbor, Hey Monday, Anarbor, and a little bit o' Mike Posner, The Pretty Reckless, and Artist Vs. Poet). Biggest laments: Christofer Drew of Never Shout Never's vocal rest and a time table that was inconsistent as the day went on.

Highlight of the day was a photo WITH the above frontwoman. However, my face on a 90 something degree day spent in the midst of a dancing crowd? Let's spare you that gruesomeness.

Back to Juliet Simms - she's featured in title track of the latest Secondhand Serenade album (released August 3rd) and the first full-length of her band is in (all the good) stores (that sell (good) music) now. But if you wanna hear her vocal chops, check out the song that first introduced me to her - my favorite song of all time (not saying it to be punny it's the complete truth) - All Time Low's Remembering Sunday.

*gotta give half of my obsessive love to Hayley Williams of Paramore fame

click to listen.

Vans Warped Tour

http://www.vanswarpedtour.com/warpedtour/bands.asp

Everybody Else

"What happens when the music industry comes to the point to no return (of money to the artists that is), you're dropped from your label, and Obama is elected president? Inspired by our current president's 'grass-roots' campaign efforts, the Californian trio Everybody Else decided to take a gamble and see if their fans were like everybody else (sorry, had to go there!) in the world or if they actually saw monetary value in whatever they listened to through their iPod earphones. People (that means you) can pledge any amount of money in return for some kickbutt prizes and the happiness of taking part in financing the band's next album. But if they don't reach their goal of $8,000 by the deadline then nothing'll be donated at all. It seems that people are more than willing to back the band with a twenty dollar bill (fact: Andrew Jackson is the president featured on the front, the burning Twin Towers are the hidden image on the back)."

Their music is suffiently indie and unique to the point where this teenager can't really explain it. With influences ranging from Rooney to Wilco and Petty to Prince, you can hardly blame me. What I can tell you is that the clear, vintage voice of Carrick Moore Gerety is well-showcased and all the better for delivering one catchy lyric after another. And it sounds to these untrained ears like they play their instruments alright, too.

"you're putting on makeup, you don't believe in love, what are you so scared of?"

click to listen.
click to donate.

My Aim Is True

The Georgia band formerly known as Say Vandelay

Augustana

As the writers of piano rock hit 'Boston,' Augustana managed to make a name for themselves back in 2006. They followed it up with their sensational third full-length, Can't Love, Can't Hurt. But as these five guys are as much road-loving vagabonds as they are musicians, it's been over two years since that release. While I love hearing the chorus of 'Sweet and Low' through the T.J.Maxx speaker's as much as the next shopper, I cannot wait for new material that can allow Augustana to keep their crown of band with the best ballads. Speaking of which...potential new songs go by the following titles:

Stars
Someone's Baby Now
Hurricane
Make Love
Baby Please
Steal Your Heart (Away)
Borrowed Time

...promising, no?

click to listen.

EDIT: Augustana's latest, a self-titled release... has hardly been released. Back in January, it was hinted that the plans for the band were uncertain as for what would happen once the Believer's Never Die Part Deux tour was completed. Given the nature of the lyrics and video of the eighth track, What A Catch, Donnie, from Folie à Deux, people began think of the single as FOB's swan song. Recently, bassist/frontman Pete Wentz announced "the world needs a break from Fall Out Boy."

All this information still would still leave me hopeful, but being made aware that a greatest hits album named after their recent tour (Believers Never Die) is coming out in November gives me a bad feeling in my gut. My personal opinion is that singer Patrick Stump is going to work at the solo album that so many have encouraged him to put out and Wentz will continue being a jack-of-all-entertainment-industry-based-trades (as for the rest of the band, uh good luck with the rest of you lives...). As parting words, however, I'd like to include that Wentz told Paste Magazine "There's nothing worse than when you like a band...and you can totally tell that...they just felt like they had to put out a record."

"I've got troubled thoughts and the self-esteem to match, what a catch, what a catch"

click to listen.

The Academy Is...

The Academy Is... is releasing what has been referred to as The AP/EP (an EP brought into being through Alternative Press magazine) and has now been revealed as being a five-song release titled Lost in Pacific Time. But where their songs used to be catchy emo lyrics sets to run-of-the mill pop-punk, they have added some variety into the mix. With a standard structure ballad featuring Taylor Swift (Two Is Better Than One), a song that sounds stolen from Switchfoot (Someone Like You), and a song breaking the six-minute mark (Go), Boys Like Girls changed it up some. With only some demos and EPs under his belt (under the alias of nevershoutnever!), he has yet to create a full length album, but his music is has millions of Myspace hits and some diehard fans that will vouch for his talent. He sounds like the typical Youtube star, and he's got a scene hairstyle to fit the stereotype, but he has a standout quality in his sincerity. Even if you were to find his high voice and lovey-dovey lyrics to be sickenly sweet, you've got to appreciate that multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters of his caliber are hard to come by these days. Check out his new cover of Yesterday. He admits himself that he can't quite stack up to The Beatles, but he has made an attempt.

"all we ever did was move around, I was always the new kid - never the cool kid. all I ever wanted to do was to fall in love"

click to listen.

Cute Is What We Aim For

byebye CIWWAF (I'm very glad that I won't be using that acronym as much anymore)

So many band break-ups, so little time to properly mourn all of them. But in the case of Buffalo, New York's Cute Is What We Aim For break-up (due to lead singer Shaant Hacikyan's ego), a surprisingly few number of fans are actually upset. Given that they released such a strong debut (The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch) and then came out with the highly commercial and far less creative Rotation, many fans gave up on them a while ago. But the good news is that bassist Dave Melillo is likely going to go back to his solo career, and that seems to me to be have more talent than Cute ever did.

"I've got birds in my ear, and a devil on my shoulder and what's a crush to do? what's a crush to do?"

click to listen.

Train

The official video can be found here.

The band that brought the radio hit of Drops of Jupiter (and lots of other songs of less popularity but equal caliber like Meet Virginia, When I Look To The Sky, and Calling All Angels). One final Bright Eyes album will still be released in 2010 so hold the sadness off until you hear Conor's melancholy lyrics.

"language just happened, it was never planned, and it's inadequate to describe where I am"

click to listen.

Cobra Starship

Mark your calendar: Cobra Starship's new album comes out August 11th. With the single Good Girls Go Bad the band has managed to get a lot of mainstream success (the song peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts and is #4 on iTunes this very second). There is the typical backlash from their original fans who have been dancing to their music since the Snakes On A Plane days, but it isn't irrational. Cobra chose to record with Leighton Meister, co-star of of the TV teen drama Gossip Girl. The girl can sing, I'll give her that. But along with her voice, she's brought 'posers' which leads to crazy forums and angry fans. The lesser-known truth? Frontman Gabe Saporta watches the Gossip Girl. That might just explain it (though it doesn't explain why a twenty-nine year old male watches it...that kid ain't growing up anytime soon).

"I heard that you were trouble, but I couldn't resist"

click to listen.

Cartel

The Georgia band, Cartel, has released a single (Let's Go) from their upcoming album Cycles. He's got a coast-to-coast tour lined up starting in September. Is music created in Adam's parents' basement worth all this hype? I'd say so. With its sugary lyrics and cutesy synthesizer bings, and even an adorable duet thrown in (The Saltwater Room), your teeth will be rotting out of your head...in the best way possible.

"why do I tire of counting sheep when I'm far too tired to fall asleep?"

click to listen.

Basic Music Sites Primer

Purevolume.
O.M.G. (I'm a teenage girl, I have a right to say that) This site is the perfect combination of signed and undiscovered bands. You can create a playlist of your favorited songs. Reliable tour information, commenting, and streaming songs are all available on each band's individual page.If I haven't sold yet, occasionally a band will put up a downloadable demo. The only thing better than music is free (and legal) music!

YouTube.
Uh yeah. I'm pretty positive that you've heard of this one. But do you use every feature to the max? Quicklists, Playlists, and Favoriting - all brilliant. Note: If you don't have an account GET ONE NOW. But music videos, and not just the official ones, but interesting ones like Daft Punk's Harder Better Faster Stronger with hands (just look it up if you haven't already) and cool photo slideshows that must've taken hours of rifling through Photobucket. There's some undiscovered singer-songwriters looking to make it big and some horrible cover artists, variety.

LetsSingIt.
The best lyric search engine out there, though not perfect by any means. Search by artist, album, song title, or lyric and you're guaranteed to find any popular lyrics. I personally listen to some obscure stuff and it won't always be on LetsSingIt, but when it is, the lyrics tend to be the most correct. And it definitely satisfies me, the grammar queen to find very few (none that I recall) misspellings!

Last.fm. This site offers more than the typical information on bands (bio, loads of pictures, news, events) because it comes along with the handy "Similar Artists" feature. That's right, type in your favorite band and they'll give you a list of potential new favorite bands. Plus, people tag the bands with the appropriate genres, which can really help if you're clueless.

Panic! at the Disco

The exclamation point is back! Panic! at the Disco (formerly Panic at the Disco) seems to be flip-flopping an awful lot - and not just when it comes to punctuation. They just dropped two of their four members (Jon Walker and Ryan Ross left, leaving only Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith) this month due to creative differences and such. And their music has seemed to come full circle. Their 2005 debut, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out was pop-punk through and through, so they definitely shocked fans with Beatlesque sophomore album Pretty. Odd. It seems that their newest single is more like their original material. Make your own opinion of the song, but I think that its title New Perspective is appropriate.

"who cares divine intervention I wanna be praised from a new perspective"

click to listen.

blink-182 Tour

The first blink-182 tour since their reunion is this summer/fall with opening acts The All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, Panic at the Disco, Taking Back Sunday, Chester French, and Asher Roth.
